EXAONEPath was developed by LG AI Research to address critical challenges in digital histopathology, particularly the difficulty of analyzing ultra-high-resolution Whole Slide Images (WSIs) exceeding a billion pixels per slide. These images are fundamental for diagnosing conditions like cancer, but their size and variability can hinder the effectiveness of AI models due to staining and scanning differences. EXAONEPath overcomes this using a Multi-Instance Learning (MIL) framework that breaks down WSIs into smaller tiles, encodes each tile independently into latent vectors, and then aggregates them. This approach preserves essential morphological traits such as cell density and tissue structure, ensuring accurate slide-level predictions while maintaining computational efficiency.
During training, EXAONEPath uses a self-supervised learning approach, like the DINO method, to understand large sets of histopathology images without needing labels for each image. For handling differences in color and appearance caused by the H&E stain, the model uses stain normalization techniques, ensuring the images are more consistent and helping the system learn better. The first model was trained on 35,000 publicly available whole slide images (WSIs) and tested on six benchmark datasets. It demonstrated comparable accuracy, requiring fewer resources than other models like Prov-GigaPath and CTransPath.
